Before anything else, let us define what antioxidant foods are. From the word antioxidant, these are foods that contain molecules that stops or slows down the free radicals produced during the process oxidation. This may sound very complicated but these by-products produced during oxidation can harm and eventually damage cells in our bodies. Antioxidant foods then, give prevention and cure to those damage caused by oxidation. If these damages are not prevented and gets worse, several diseases can emerge like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. Certain foods that are high in Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Glutathione, Carotenoids, and Vitamin E are said to be the ones with the highest concentrations of antioxidants.

This is the reason why many dietitians suggest antioxidant foods to their patients to ensure a healthy living, together with exercise and happy disposition in life. In this article, we will discuss the top antioxidant foods that are readily available in the market and that are commonly known to people.

Ø Sources of Vitamin C – These are fresh fruits that are mostly citrus in nature like orange, lime, lemon, etc. and vegetables like dark green leafy veggies, bell peppers, broccoli, etc. Berries also have high content of vitamin C which includes strawberries and raspberries.

Ø Carotenoids – This is composed of nutrients that include lycopene, carotenes and lutein. These are found usually in high-colored fruits and vegetables. Carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, mangoes, apricots, tomatoes, watermelons and eggs belong to this category.

Ø Vitamin E – Usually in the form of vegetable oils, nuts and certain seeds. Liver oil (usually taken as a supplement) is one example of this. Vegetable oil from olives, corn, and soybea ns together with certain nuts like walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, have high Vitamin E content.

Ø Others – Green tea and white tea has been said to have the highest levels of antioxidant per serving. There has been a study that shows people who drink tea everyday have lower mortality (death) rate like the Japanese and the Chinese people. Other foods found in the groceries that also have high antioxidant concentrations are oatmeal, dark chocolate (make sure that it has more cocoa content in it and less sugar), red wine, and raisins.
